The
Basic Rules:

Use the library to read and to research. |
Our
library combines print resources (books) and
electronic resources (computer programs
and on-line research and internet access) to
provide a complete learning environment.
We have materials for reading and research,
for check out and for use in the library.
There are two seating areas with tables for
small and large groups and three cozy areas
for quiet reading.

General
Information: Students may come to the
library to work, study or read.
You may come before school starts, between classes
and after school. With a note from a teacher,
students may come individually or in small groups
during class. Teachers may reserve the library
for their classes to come as a group. Time blocks
of 30 and 60 minutes are available. Teachers
must sign up twenty-four hours in advance and
should talk to the librarian
to cooperatively plan the lesson.

The library is open from 8:30 am until 4:30
pm.

General
Rules: When you
come in the library, sign in on the clipboard
at the circulation desk.
Leave food, drinks and gum outside.
Respect the rights of all the library users
and work quietly.
Help us keep the library organized by returning
the materials you used to their proper places.
Help keep the library looking good by straightening
bookshelves, pushing in your chair, picking
up your trash, etc.
Computers:
Computers are to be used strictly for educational
purposes. (Specific information is listed below.)
Copies:
Copies of print materials are available for
ten cents per page. Library helpers
will do the copying.
Circulation:
Students need their student ID
cards in order to check out materials. You
may check out up to 5 books at a time for a
two week period. Please be considerate
of others and return your books on time. Students
will be charged for lost or damaged books. |

FICTION
BOOKS are "make-believe"
stories and are found on the upper level
of the library, along the wall on the right
side. They are arranged alphabetically by
the last name of the author. |

|
STORY
COLLECTIONS
are found at the last row of fiction books.
They have a call number of SC and the author's
last name. Story Collections are books in
which each chapter is a complete story. |
|
|
NON-FICTION
BOOKS are true
stories and are located on the lower level,
on the left side as you enter the library.
Non-fiction books are arranged in number
order, according to the Dewey Decimal System. |

|
BIOGRAPHIES
are stories of a person's life. They
are found on the lower level, on the right
side. Individual biographies are arranged
by the person's last name and have a B on
the label. In collective biographies each
chapter is about a different person. These
books have a 920 on the label and are arranged
by the author's last name. |

|
MAGAZINES
are also found on the lower level. They
may be used in the library but cannot be
checked out. The library subscribes to over
40 magazines for educational use and pleasure
reading. |

|
PAPERBACK
BOOKS are on
the lower level on the last row of shelves
on the right. Students who owe money for
fines and lost books may check out only
one paperback. |

ENCYCLOPEDIAS
are on the upper level, on the shelves under
the office windows. They may be used in
the library, but not checked out. |
|
|
REFERENCE
BOOKS are also
on the upper level, on the shelves under
the office windows. They may be used in
the library, but not checked out. There
reference books for all the main subject
areas. |
Non-Print
Materials |

AUDIO
BOOKS are
sets of either cassette tapes or CDs and
paperback books. Because of
the high cost of these sets, students
need to have a permission form signed
by their parents before they can borrow
Audio Books. |

Computer
Use
We have
computers on the upper level which are to be
used to support classroom learning. Ask for
permission before printing.
Our guidelines state: "Inappropriate use
of the Internet is prohibited. Do not
stay on any site that contains sexual materials,
obscenity, or profanity. Do not download and
store music and video clips. All chat rooms
on the Internet are prohibited. Do not access
information that is not directly related to
the class objectives. Do not reveal your personal
address or phone number to anyone on the Internet."
Don't
personalize the computers in any of the following
ways: installing screen savers, changing the
desktop background, change the video and audio
settings, adding, changing or moving icons on
the desktop. |

Horizon
IPAC is
the GPISD on-line catalog.
Ask a library helper or Mrs. Sessler to
show you how to use it. |
|
Our district
purchases databases
of research tools for use at school and
from home. World Book Encyclopedia) and
Gale Group Resources (magazine articles
in English and Spanish, reference articles,
dictionaries, timelines, Texas Almanac,
Exploring Poetry and Exploring Shakespeare,
biographies, history resource center,
literature resource center and others.)
