There are so many different book
genres! Here are some of them...

FICTION
|
|
|
Adventure
and Survival
Stories that
are exciting and usually have a threat of danger. They
are often stories of survival and man against nature
|
|
|
Fantasy
A fiction story where there is a struggle between good
and evil. Often times, there is magic. The characters
or objects do things that couldn't happen in real life--
animals talk, people fly, etc.
|
|
|
Historical
Fiction
Some characters may be real and others are fictional.
The story takes place during a period in history. Real
events from history are mixed with fictional events.
Characters may speak in a way that represents the time
period.

|
|
Humor
Stories full
of fun, fancy and excitement.
|
|
|
Horror: Ghosts,Vampires,
Scary Stories
These usually deal with things that don't happen in
real life, like ghosts and vampires and other supernatural
events.

|
|
Mystery
and Detective Stories
The characters investigate and solve crimes. A mystery
may have a
detective, policeman or a spy as a main character.
|
|
|
Realistic
Fiction
These books take place in modern times and are about
things that could be true and could actually happen,
but they aren't.

|
Romance
Stories where a girl meets a boy and they fall in love.
Sometimes they live happily ever after.
|
|
|
Science
Fiction
These stories are based on scientific facts and are
written with future ideas such as space travel, life
on other planets, and new technology.
|
|
|
Sports
These are stories about people who play all different
sports; they might play for make-believe teams or sometimes
they're make-believe characters who play for real teams.

|
|
Westerns
They are a type of historical fiction that deals with
life in the American West as it was being settled.
|
|
NON-FICTION
|
|
|
Biographies
A biography is a book of true stories about the life
of a real person. The person in the biography can be
dead or alive.

Fables,
Fairy Tales and Tall Tales and Legends
Folk tales
are stories with no known
creator. They were originally passed down from one generation
to another by word of mouth. The authors of folk tale
books today are retelling these stories.
Tall tales are generally
folk tales in which the main character is bigger than
life in some way -- examples would be Paul Bunyan, Mike
Fink, Johnny Appleseed.
Fairy tales were often created to teach children
behavior in an entertaining way.
They often begin with "Once upon a time..."
and they end with "They lived happily ever after."

Graphic
Novels
"Comic books" A
graphic novel can be a collection of comics (think Garfield
and the Simpsons) or
it can be a version of a novel told mostly in drawings.

Myths
They take place before people were on earth. They try
to explain things about the world and involve gods and
supernatural beings.
|
|
|
Poetry
It usually touches your feelings. It may or may not
be written with rhymes.
|
|
|
Reference/
How To
These books provide true facts and information. Some
examples include: dictionary, almanac, atlas, thesaurus,
and encyclopedia.
